The department was established with the introduction of the Pre Degree Course in 1965 and later expanded to offer B.Sc. Botany Model || (Vocational Food Microbiology) in 1999 and M.Sc. Food and Industrial Microbiology in 2013. The department is committed to fostering academic excellence through a well-structured curriculum that combines theoretical knowledge with practical experience. It follows the syllabus and course pattern prescribed by the Mahatma Gandhi University. It offers the value added course in "Mushroom Cultivation".
The department has three minor projects to its credit. The department provides comprehensive learning environment supported by experienced faculties, modern laboratories and field-based training. It aims to make skilled professionals and researchers dedicated to exploring various aspects of plant sciences, Environmental Sustainability and biodiversity conservation.

Establishment and Early Years: The Biology Department was established, offering Pre-Degree Courses, laying the foundation for higher studies in Plant Sciences.
Introduction of B.Sc. Botany model II (Vocational Food Microbiology) Programme: Recognizing the growing interest in plant sciences, the department introduced the B.Sc. Programme in Botany. focusing a core plant science and applied sciences.
Department Growth 2000-2013: Expansion of infrastructure, including modern labs, research facilities and fieldwork programmes, enhancing the learning experience.
Launch of M.Sc. Food and Industrial Microbiology Programme The department achieved a significant milestone by introducing the M.Sc. Programme enabling advanced studies and research in specialized area of microbiology.
Recent Programmes Achievements: Organization of seminars, workshops, outreach programmes promoting environmental awareness, conservation and sustainable practices. Recognition through academic ranks, research publications and placement of graduates in reputed institutions and industries worldwide.

The students today face multifarious challenges during this pandemic situation. The pandemic has opened up new avenues and created new environments and new conditions for learning. Hence it is our duty to help them stay focused on learning with sound health, both mentally and physically. Over the years, the Department has provided the students with opportunities to explore and grow through situations that challenge them to identify their strength and reinforce them.
